CDC to work in HIV sector in Ganjam district

BERHAMPUR: The Center for Disease Control (CDC), Atlanta, an organisation under the Health department of the US, has come forward to work in HIV sector in Orissa's Ganjam district, home to highest number of HIV positive detected persons in the state.

The US organisation will work to train capacity building to members of woman self help groups (SHG) in rural areas on the deadly disease to arrest the mounting trend of the HIV positive cases in the district.

The organisation will also work in the rural areas ensuring to bring the HIV positive persons to the anti-retroviral treatment (ART) center, presently operating at M K C G Medical College, Berhampur.

The US organisation will start it's operation from this year in Ganjam, as the district has recorded high prevalence of HIV positive, said the project director of the Orissa State Aids Control Society (OSACS), Parameswar Swain.

A workshop was held at Chhatrapur, the district headquarter town in Ganjam on Monday to identify the areas requiring attention in the district. Besides the project director, OSACS, the district level officers, NGOs and the country director, CDC Rubina La mpiaz attended the workshop.

The CDC would launch its operation in the district through the Lepra India society, a country based NGO. - PTI
