West Bengal attracts Rs 63,961 cr investment proposals in 2007

KOLKATA: West Bengal government had succeeded in attracting 7.7 per cent of the total investment proposals in 2007, through Industrial Entrepreneurs Memorandum (IEM) among the leading industrial states of the country.

The Directorate of Industries said West Bengal received 226 IEMs involving Rs 63,961 crore in 2007, which translate into 7.7 per cent of the aggregate investment attracted by Gujarat, Maharashtra, Orissa, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand beside Bengal.

"Total additional employment generation from the investment was expected 1.17 lakh,'' Deputy Director of Industries T K Dasgupta told PTI.

Analysis of various IEMs issued during the year reveals that maximum investment proposals came from iron & steel sector contributing 46.64 per cent (Rs 29,834 crore) followed by power sector that attracted 27.7 per cent (Rs 17,714 crore) of the total pro posed investment.

This year the State received 15 proposals involving Rs 2,190 crore and employment of 6,512 people in the emerging industry of the State, automobile and auto-ancillary. Most of these were from component makers for Tata Motor's small car project at Singur .

Other sectors also drew some investment. Food processing (Rs 339 crore), Jute and textile (Rs 338 crore), engineering (Rs 296 crore), chemical (Rs 1960 crore), refinery (Rs 5941 crore), while rest drew insignificant investments.

Among notable investment proposals from iron and steel sector were Jai Balaji Industries that announced investment of Rs 7,737 crore while Adhunik Corporation said it will pump Rs 1850 crore in Purulia district. - PTI
