Arunachal highway given NH status

ITANAGAR: The proposed Trans-Arunachal Highway, part of the prime minister's package for Arunachal Pradesh, has been accorded National Highway status by the Centre under the National Highway Act, 1956.

According to a gazette notification, the proposed 1550-km highway would be extended to a few towns of upper Assam, including Dibrugarh. After crossing the river Brahmaputra through the Saikhowa Ghat, it would culminate near Roing in Arunachal Pradesh.

Estimated to cost Rs 10,000 crore, the highway to be known as NH 229, would run through the foothills connecting 13 district headquarters from Tawang at one end and Khonsa on the other end in Arunachal before joining NH 37 and NH 52 on either side of the Brahmaputra in Assam.

Work on the project was expected to start simultaneously at different points soon and would be executed by the Union ministry of Surface Transport through different agencies.

The PWD minister Mr Nabam Tuki welcomed the move, saying it reflected the commitment of the Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and Congress president Ms Sonia Gandhi to help the land-locked state.

Meanwhile, the Governor, Gen (Retd.) J J Singh said work for the proposed Itanagar greenfield airport and Harmuti-Itanagar Railway project would begin by the year end.

The Governor who met Union Environment and Forest Minister Mr R Menon at New Delhi on Wednesday, said the ministry was processing the file for granting environment clearance soon to the airport project.

These three projects were part of the financial package announced by Dr Manmohan Singh here on January 31. - PTI
