Govt/States WB framing textile policy to build 'Brand Bengal' KOLKATA: Seeking to build 'Brand Bengal' in textiles, the West Bengal government is formulating its first textiles policy with emphasis on manufacturing, according to the State's SME and Textiles Minister Mr Manab Mukherjee. "The government is formulating a comprehensive textiles policy for the development of the sector. The main emphasis will be on manufacturing," the minister said after inaugurating 'TexVision 2007,' eastern India's largest textile exhibition here. With traditional skills in needlework, zari-work and 'kantha' stitch available in the State, the government wanted the textile policy to help leverage the skills in building 'Brand Bengal' for these products, he said. There was a huge internal market for textiles in the State as its economy had grown impressively over the past 30 years, he said adding the government's biggest challenge was to develop the textile industry not only to cater to the internal market but al so to facilitate exports. The state would emerge as the largest manufacturer of finished silk products during the 11th plan, he said adding the government was setting up the country's first silk park at Malda in North Bengal. It had also moved the Centre for help in building the first silk fabric printing centre at Serampore near here. - PTI
