Cafe Leopold opens today amidst sloganeering

MUMBAI: Cafe Leopold, famous restaurant of southern Mumbai which was one of the first sites to be attacked by the terrorists, opened on Sunday amidst patriotic slogans and presence of huge crowd outside it.

Slogans “Bharat Mata Ki Jai,” “Vande Matram” and “Pakistan Murdabad” rented the air the moment the cafe opened its door. It became the first terror hit site to start the operation.

Established in 1871, the cafe is behind another terror attack site Taj Mahal Palace hotel. It offers the scenic view of the vibrant street life of the metropolis making it a famous joint of foreign tourists.

Its openness to the street made it an easy target when two terrorist equipped with assault rifles opened fire here on November 26 evening. According to reports about 10 people were hit during the mayhem.

The cafe known for offering cheap beer has its mention in roman clef novel 'Shantaram' by Gregory David Roberts, a convicted Australian bank robber. - PTI
