Monsanto asked to pay compensation

AKOLA: The Akola District Consumer Grievance Redressal Forum has directed genetically modified seeds producer Monsanto India Ltd to pay a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the farmers for supplying faulty seeds of sunflower.

The Forum however, in its recent judgement gave clean chit to various agro centres in the region observing that the seeds were sold before the expiry date.

It rejected claims of compensation of five farmers, as they did not produce requisite receipts of purchasing seeds, while other 20 farmers were compensated.

According to the complaint, the corns of sunflower seeds named 'Kargil SH 3322' were found to be 60 per cent empty. The seeds were also sent for tests in which it was found that they were faulty. - PTI
