Left will fight political battle against N-deal: Karat

KOZHIKODE: Accusing the UPA government of winning the trust vote in Parliament through “horsetrading,” CPI(M) General Secretary Mr Prakash Karat on Tuesday said Left parties will launch a political movement to overthrow it and ensure that the Indo-US nuc lear deal does not see the light of day.

“The Government may have managed to win the trust vote by engaging in corruption and other illegal means but there is still a long way to go before the deal becomes really operational,” Mr Karat said at an international book festival here.

“The battle has to be fought politically in coming days as the deal will become operational quite later. Before that, surely, we will face Lok Sabha elections and this government will be thrown out,” he said.

Noting that the people were becoming aware of the dangers of accepting the deal, Mr Karat said, “We are confident that with the people's support, we will be able to defeat this anti-national agreement.”

It is unfortunate that the Manmohan Singh-led government has surrendered to the dictates of the US, he said, adding the Prime Minister's claims that the agreement would meet our energy needs are “totally baseless.” – PTI
