WITH THE shipbuilding sector yet to come out of a recession, and with shipbuilders in the neighbouring countries offering massive price cuts, Indian shipyards should perhaps start to diversify.

GUJARAT, which leads in the development of minor ports, may have entered the next stage of minor port development, wherein the backup infrastructure gets investment emphasis. At a recent press briefing in Mumbai, senior Gujarat Maritime Board (GMB) offic ials said the Board is considering being a co-investor in the pipeline project proposed by Gujarat State Petronet Ltd (GSPL). These pipelines are for transporting liquefied natural gas (LNG), which three to four ports in Gujarat can handle.

IN APRIL, the Union Government proposes to negotiate with the World Bank a $480-million assistance for the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and also a $75-million loan for the Department of Telecommunications.

IN A joint memorandum, the Food and Civil Supplies Ministers of north-eastern States _ Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Tripura _ have urged the Union Surface Transport Minister to upgrade the Stilwell Road, extending from Ledo in Assam to Yunan (China) via Myanmar, to the level of a National Highway.
