HPS invests $2.8 m on quality upgrade

M. Somasekhar

NEW DELHI, Dec. 7

HCL Perot Systems (HPS), a 50:50 joint venture between HCL Technologies and the US-based Perot Systems Corporation, has said that its investment of up to $2.8 million on raising quality levels has paid rich dividends.

The company has not only qualified as the youngest company to get the SEI-CMM level 5 rating, but has demonstrated up to 400 per cent on returns on investment on quality, Mr Rakesh Soni, Vice-President (Quality & Information Systems) at HCL Perot Systems , Noida, said.

Mr Soni cited the example of a multi-million dollar migration project of a large investment bank, which required the efforts of 1,800 person-months, but HPS could execute it in just 17 months.

Backed with the SEI-CMM Level 5 rating for all its activities at all sites from KPMG in February, HPS has launched itself into providing quality related services to customers in the three areas of process, technology and people recently, Mr Soni told Bus iness Line.

With just over a dozen Indian software firms having got the SEI-CMM Level 5 rating from Carnegie Mellon University, HPS has started implementing the recently released CMMI model, an improved version of SEI-CMM with advanced features for reuse of software , risk management and metrics, he added.

Another initiative started by HPS is the people's CMM, driven by the company's human resources group to ensure greater confidence among customers in the processes of HPS, Mr Soni said.

The India operations of the company grossed a turnover of $70 million during the 1999-2000 fiscal, and as part of its restructuring, the company has doubled its manpower to 1,800.

The company is focused on providing quality services in the telecom, financial, manufacturing and travel/logistics sectors, with clients being predominantly overseas.

Mr Soni said that the company has succeeded in leveraging the quality ratings as well as practices in terms of infusing efficiency to customers as well as getting repeat contracts from them.
