Strike called off at Wimco factory

CHENNAI: Workers at the Wimco match factory here have called off the strike, but the wage hike issue is yet to be settled, according to union sources.

According to representatives of the Wimco Employees' Union, workers decided to restore normality on the advise of the officials of the State Government's Labour Department. The officials had been involved in conciliation talks with the management over lo ng-term wage settlement, they said.

Further, conciliation talks were likely to take place later this month, said sources. Workers resumed operations on December 11, after maintenance work was carried out over the weekend.

The facility employs over 650 workers. They had gone on strike from November 6, following breakdown of wage settlement talks with the management. Discussions had been going on since the previous wage settlement ended on December 21, 1999. -- Our Bureau
