Good demand for CTCs at Guwahati sale

Our Bureau

GUWAHATI, Dec. 14

CTC offerings met with a good demand this week and the price levels for better Assams were firm. Grainy and good leaf well-sized brokens in the medium segment also sold at around last levels.

But remaining Assams tended easier in line with declining quality, especially browner and fibrous sorts. Few selected better Cachars maintained levels but the remainder eased in value, particularly where a seasonal decline was evident. The major blender continued to support good and better medium descriptions actively but was selective in the rest. There was some interest from Tata Tea and Duncans though the other packeteers remained subdued. Western India buyers operated for better sorts with fair inte rest from the other internal and local markets. Exporters absorbed larger brokens at slightly lower levels compared to the previous week's levels.

Clean and liquoring sorts continued to attract good enquiry in the dust room with the prices remaining stable for these categories. Finer sorts attracted competition and were also higher at times. The remainders were irregularly lower in line with qualit y with non-liquoring and fibrous sorts witnessing some withdrawals.

Tata Tea and the Western India buyers competed actively for the brighter teas on offer. There was also some enquiry from one of the packeteers while the other local buyers primarily operated for cheaper sorts.

Arrivals at the auction centre during last month were lower than that of last year. About 6,16,000 packages were received as against 8,83,000 last year.
