Bank forum calls strike on Dec 21

CALCUTTA, Dec. 14
THE United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU), the body of nine unions of bank employees and officers, has given a call for a nationwide bank strike on December 21 to protest against the Banking Companies (Acquisition & Transfer of Undertakings) and Financial I
nstitutions Laws (Amendment) Bill 2000 introduced in Parliament on Wednesday.
The decision on the strike was taken at a meeting of the UFBU leaders held here on Thursday.
UFBU called upon its members to hold mass rallies and processions on December 19, stage State-level dharnas and deputations to the Governors in each State and submit a memorandum to the President on December 15.
Besides, there would be conventions in district headquarters throughout the country with participation of political parties, trade unions, kisan sabhas and mass organisations. The employees of the cooperative banks and regional rural banks would also be
involved in the strike, according to a statement issued by UFBU leaders at the end of the meeting.
At today's UFBU meeting, Mr S.R. Sengupta, General-Secretary of the All-India Bank Officers' Confederation, Mr Tarakeswar Chakraborti, General-Secretary of the All-India Bank Employees' Association, and Mr S Bardhan, General-Secretary of Bank Employees F
ederation of India, were present.
The local representatives on behalf of the respective general-secretaries of the National Confederation of Bank Employees, the All-India Bank Officers' Association, the National Organisation of Bank Workers, the National Organisation of Bank Officers and
the Indian National Bank Employees' Federation also attended the meeting.
