Satyam arm launches site, in pact with US firm

Our Bureau

CHENNAI, Dec. 14

SATYAM Educational Services Ltd (SESL), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Satyam Infoway Ltd, has launched www.learnatsatyam.com -- a virtual learning campus that imparts training and education to both corporates and students. It has also tied up with Element K of the US, an online education service provider.

SESL's tie-up with Element K will enhance the quality of educational programmes and provide corporates and students a wider range of educational services, Mr R. Ramaraj, Managing Director and CEO, Satyam Infoway, and Mr K. Thiagarajan, President, SESL, t old a press conference here on Wednesday.

Element K is a leading provider of corporate e-learning solutions for business and technology skills. It offers more than 600 information technology and business courses designed exclusively for the Web.

Mr Thiagarajan said the online education market was estimated at $1.5 billion and was expected to go up to $22 billion in three years.

He said more than 500 course titles would be offered through the virtual campus. SESL had done quite a bit of market survey as to the demand, but ``it will require evangelisation'' to get more people to switch over to the online training mode.

The IT training market in India was estimated at about Rs 1,500 crore and this was witnessing a phenomenal growth. Even garnering 10 per cent of this market meant an income of about Rs 150 crore, he said.

Apart from targeting corporates for training programmes for its staff, SESL would reach individuals by leveraging Satyam Infoway's network and cross selling the product through this network.

Mr Thiagarajan said the course revenue would be shared on a royalty basis with Element K, which on an average would work out to about 25 per cent.

He said online training could result in nearly 60-70 per cent cost savings when compared to conventional training methods.

With the electronic instructor-led training (EILT), students can interact with virtual instructors who will take them through their courses. A 24-hour online reference facility from Element K, apart from the journals and Web resources, makes learnatsatya m.com an extensive guide for students, a Satyam Infoway release said.
