KOCHI, May 1

COCHIN Shipyard is planning to expand its ship repair facilities by setting up marine workshops in various major ports such as Chennai, Tuticorin, Mumbai and Kochi.

The yard has already expressed its interest in associating with the setting up of ship repair complex at Kochi Port Trust in an area of 700 acres to the ships passing through the international channel, a press release issued here said.

Meanwhile, the yard has bagged yet another contract for replacement of deck cranes at SE and SJ platforms for ONGC at Bombay High at a cost of Rs 77 million against stiff international competition.

The work involves procurement, transportation, installation barges and commissioning. The yard has entered into an understanding with the US-based Patriot for the supply of cranes.

As part of its expansion drive, CSL has diversified into the offshore area. In the recent past, two projects were secured against international competition and both were completed ahead of schedule.

The first project which was for enhancing the drilling capacity of 12 drilling platforms in Bombay High South involved fabrication and installations of 700 tonnes of steel structures and vertical and curved conductor pipes at Bombay High.

A similar project for three drilling platforms in the Heera fields was completed 10 days ahead of schedule, the release added.
