Lankan tea firm eyes Indian market

P.S. Sundar

SINGAPORE, June 17

SRI Lankan tea export major, Imperial Tea Exports (Pvt) Ltd, is eyeing the vast internal market prevailing in India.

``We are definitely interested in promoting our brands in India,''said Mr Nisal Weerasekera, senior tea buyer and taster for the company, who was here to participate in the Food Ingredients Asia 2001 exhibition.

``Now that India is allowing tea imports and permits imports from Sri Lanka at a concessional duty of 7.5 per cent under the SAARC policy, it should be possible for Indian importers to buy our teas, he said.

Currently, the company exports to 25 countries including Russia, Lithuania, Latvia, Uzbekistan and Dubai. It has a good share in Japan, Australia, China, Taiwan, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait,Germany, Lebanon and the US.

It is the sixth largest tea exporter in Sri Lanka with an annual turnover of around 15,000 tonnes valued at about $35 million.
