Facilities at Alang

Vinod Mathew

THE major draws for the Alang box office in the coming season include the Alang Ship Recycling Institute (ASRI) getting ready for commissioning by April 2002 at a capital outlay of Rs 4 crore.

Fashioned more like a speciality college with an active R&D wing, the ASRI would perhaps be the first of its kind in the whole world and would draw from a plethora of global experts to impart knowledge, at the same time look for students from across the sea-faring nations.

The other infrastructural facilities that are fast coming up at Alang include a 50-bed hospital with a modern trauma wing to take care of the accidents that take place, though with lesser frequency these days and a 16-km piped water network from the Mahi pipeline that will do away once and for the dependence of the 30,000-odd labourers on unhygienic water brought in by tankers.
