Low-sulphur diesel supply extended to NCR, Kolkata

Our Bureau

NEW DELHI, July 1

THE Government has announced the extension of supply of low sulphur diesel to all the areas of the National Capital Region (NCR) and the Kolkata Municipal Corporation with effect from July 1, 2001.

The Petroleum Ministry is said to have directed the oil industry to supply all retail outlets in these territories with diesel with a maximum of 0.05 per cent sulphur.

As a result of the switch over to supplying superior grades of diesel in the NCR and Kolkata, the retail selling price of diesel would increase by about 50 paise per litre in Kolkata and about 49 to 54 paise per litre in the NCR.

An official communique said that the supply of diesel with 0.05 per cent maximum sulphur content requires changes in the manufacturing process, involving higher cost of production for refineries. Therefore, the price of this grade of auto fuel carries a premium over normal grades in the international market, the release said.

Low sulphur diesel is already being supplied through all the retail outlets in the National Capital Territory (NCT) from March 1, 2001 and in Greater Mumbai from January this year.
