Can the services sector fend for itself?
A SIGNIFICANT feature of the revised estimates of national income for 2000-01, released by the Central Statistical Organisation (CSO) on Friday, has been the relative deceleration in the services sector after three consecutive years of heady growth.

IMF urges EU to be less protectionist
THE International Monetary Fund (IMF) has urged the 15-member European Union (EU) to make better progress in liberalising its highly protected sectors such as agriculture, processed foods, textiles and clothing for the benefit of the developing countries .

Steep rise in unemployment levels feared
THE number of unemployed persons would rise from an estimated 9.05 million in 1999-2000 to 25.94 million by 2007 and 37.42 million by 2012 in the event of the country's real gross domestic product registering only a 6.5 per cent annual growth along with a 1.8 per cent yearly increase in labour force.

FICCI plea on WTO farm rules
THE Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) has suggested that the provisions of special safeguards available under the WTO agreement on agriculture should be extended to all developing countries. It also suggested that the issue b e put on agenda for the next WTO Ministerial conference at Doha.

Export Watch
Export growth stagnant
REFLECTING external factors such as the continued slowdown of the US economy, the country's exports during the first two months of the current fiscal posted a modest 5.10 per cent growth at $7238.07 million, against $6886.74 million in the corresponding months of 2000-01.
