Spectra to be relaunched
M. Ramesh
HOSUR, July 12
TVS-Suzuki proposes to invest Rs 150 crore at its Mysore plant, ``to cater to the rising demand for mopeds in the region''.
The company's manufacturing facility at Mysore was created two years ago at a cost of Rs 300 crore for producing scooters. But, with the scooter Spectra having failed in the market, TVS-Suzuki has been manufacturing its successful scooterette, TVS Scooty
, and some moped models there.
Last month, it produced 18,000 Scootys at the Mysore plant.
The company expects to relaunch the Spectra, after appropriate modifications in terms of features, weight and price. It is not known when the relaunch would take place. When asked about this, the TVS-Suzuki's Managing Director, Mr Venu Srinivasan, said,
``you'll come to know about it.''
However, since the demand for mopeds and the Scooty is rising, the company feels there is a need to upgrade the facilities at Mysore. Hence the additional investment.
TVS-Suzuki is the market leader in the mopeds segment, with a 62 per cent share of the market. In the scooterette segment, (60 cc to 75 cc), the company has a 41 per cent market share.
In course of time, motorcycles would be produced at Hosur and scooters and mopeds at Mysore. Now that the 110 cc `Victor' is ready to be introduced into the market, the Hosur plant would be busy with this vehicle and the Fiero, which is selling 6,000 uni
ts every month.
