IN a market ruled by rumour and speculation, the arecanut growers of coastal Karnataka find themselves caught in a vortex of plummeting prices. While a few years ago the phenomenal rise in the price of arecanut had tempted several farmers to shift from ` traditional' crops to the more lucrative `cash' crop, the scenario has changed drastically now.

Bull run may continue in Malaysia palm oil
Malaysian Palm oil futures saw prices moving in a narrow range last week, mainly dominated by rises in CBOT and poor export data for the month of July. The week though started on a positive note on bullish Ivan Wong's July crop data and prospects of less intense competition from Indonesia amid a strengthening rupiah. It was mainly CBOT that was pushing prices up.

Good scope for uptrend in NY cotton
After a prolonged spell of bearishness, New York Cotton Exchange cotton futures has shown some strength at last. The price action in the previous week could end a very long bearish cycle, which started exactly one year back from 66 cents. The week starte d with perceptions of the crop size edging lower due to searing temperatures in the west Texas and building dryness in the Delta.
