Exporters seek mandate to hire and fire

K.R. Srivats

NEW DELHI, July 30

THE Federation of Indian Exporters' Organisation (FIEO) has suggested to the Second National Commission on Labour that

managements should have the prerogative to take decisions on the retention of workforce in an enterprise.

In his submissions, the FIEO President, Mr K.K. Jain, has said that managements should be allowed to take decisions after factoring in the viability of their business enterprises.

Mr Jain has also highlighted that the existing policies have stifled growth of industry and employment. ``We need to take serious look at our antiquated labour laws if we are to remain in business,'' he said.

He has also urged the Government to take ``bold steps'' in changing the labour laws. Exporters should have the right to ``let go'' the labour or hire them on the basis of their business requirements, the FIEO has said.
