India Cements plans pan-India presence

TRICHY: The India Cements Limited, manufacturer of popular brands such as Sankar and Coromandel, is inching towards attaining pan India presence.

The company has got ambitious plan to touch 14 millions tonnes capacity to be reached by March 2009 investing over Rs 2,100 crores.

Mr Rakesh Singh, Joint President - Marketing based at Hyderabad, said here that as of now the company has got four cement plants in Andhra Pradesh and three in Tamil Nadu with a total capacity of 9 million tonnes per year.

Currently there were about 8,000 stockiest in the South and Maharastra out of which 30 to 35 per cent were exclusive stockiest of Sankar and Coromandel brand and the balances were multi-brand dealers.

About 6-7 per cent of the total sales went to bulk consumers and major builders the supply of which were made through mega seized tankers and the remaining quantity were sold in the bags of 50 kgs each, he said.

Although India Cements was manufacturing high grade cements only blended cements (Pozolona, Portland cement) was very popular in the market and it accounted to 73 per cent of the total sales.

More than 90 per cent of the cement bags were made of HDPE (high density poly eutherene) and to satisfy a segment of customers in Kerala and Chennai city the cement stock were packed in paper bags, he said.

The expansion project comprise of adding one million tonnes capacity at its Chennai Plant (Ennore), similar quantity at Parli Plant in Maharastra, expansion of Alurai Plant in Tamil Nadu from 1.2 million tonnes to 2 million tonnes capcity, additional qua ntity of 0.8 million tonnes at its Vishnupuram Plant in Andhra Pradesh, adding 0.6 million tonnes in Sankari Factory in Tamil Nadu and one million addition at Malkapur Plant near Hyderabad, he said. - PTI
