Port Blair airport submerged by rainwater

PORT BLAIR: Torrential rains through the night cut off air services from the airport here on Saturday stranding passengers and virtually snapping travel links between Andaman and Nicobar Islands and the mainland.

As the Port Blair airport and the terminal building was submerged under over 1.5 feet of water, no flights could land or take off from the airport here.

Almost 207 mm of rainfall was recorded after very heavy heavy rains last night, the weather office here said.

The ground floor of the terminal building was submerged, leading passengers and others to rush to the upper floors, airport sources and passengers said.

Three flights in the morning from Kolkata - Air India, Air Deccan and Jet Airways could not land and returned to the city.

An Air Deccan and Air India flight from here to Chennai also could not take off, the sources added. "Water has just started receding. We have shut down the power plant. By today evening, we hope to clear everything and restore normalcy. Everything is und er control now," said the Airport Controller Mr R De Cruz, adding that most of the passengers were given accommodation in hotels.

For the remaining passengers, restrooms in the airport have been opened.

"We are giving them our rest rooms and whatever facilities we have at the airport for passengers," he said, adding that the water gushed into the terminal building around 0620 hours. - PTI
