Sensex loses 178 pts in volatile session

MUMBAI: After a weak start, the BSE benchmark Sensex recovered to gain 172 points to an intraday high of 12,272 at mid-session, only to gave up those gains later and ended in the red finally.

With the steep rise in heavyweight stocks, the National Stock Exchange index Nifty crossed 3,700 points briefly after almost seven months during intraday. However, later the Nifty closed at 3,625.05, down by 36.85 points from its previous close.

The Sensex traded higher in the afternoon session mainly on the back of the stocks of Reliance, SBI, Larsen & Toubro, and Infosys.

Realty, Bankex, Metal, FMCG and IT segments witnessed renewed selling and closed lower at close.
