Darjeeling tea crop down 30%

KOLKATA: Tea production in Darjeeling hills has been dipped by 30 per cent due to bad weather, a Darjeeling Tea Association (DTA) official said on Friday.

Bad weather has taken a toll on tea production in the hills, with the crop output already being down by 30 per cent during the current season, Mr R K Babaycon, Vice-Chairman of DTA said on the sidelines of annual general meeting held here today.

Last year, Darjeeling tea production stood at 9.5 million kg, 90 per cent of which had been exported. Expressing concern over the political unrest in the hills, Mr Babaycon said the tea industry had been sending feelers to leaders of Gorkha Janmukti Morc ha, the body spearheading the movement in Darjeeling, to spare the gardens and crop movement from the ambit of bandh, now relaxed till July 5.

"The workers are members of the agitating front and they appreciate the importance of the tea industry which is providing them livelihood," he said. The DTA was yet to quantify the loss as a result of the movement in the hills. - PTI
