Commodities Sugar prices surge on brisk buying NEW DELHI: Wholesale sugar prices surged by Rs 100 per quintal in the national capital on Monday on heavy buying by retailers and bulk consumers to meet the current festival and ensuing marriage season demand. Restricted supplies and reports of a fall in production of sugar were other dampening factors for high trading in the market. Marketmen said heavy buying by bulk consumers such as softdrink and ice cream producers to meet the present demand led to rise in sugar prices. They said restricted arrivals amid firming global trend also influenced the trading sentiment. The sugar ready medium and second grades shot up by Rs 100 each to Rs 2,850-2,950 and Rs 2,840-2,940 per quintal in domestic market here.
