MMTC floats bids for import of 35,000 tonnes of raw sugar

NEW DELHI: State-run trading firm MMTC on Friday invited bids on behalf of private companies for import of 35,000 tonnes of cane raw sugar to be delivered by March. The bids would close on February 17 and the decision on the tender will be taken by Febru ary 19, MMTC said on its website.

MMTC said bids should be made for a ship load of minimum quantity of 25,000 tonnes and a maximum of 35,000 tonnes. The bidder should deliver the raw sugar at Kandla, Vishakapatnam and Mumbai ports in the next month, it said.

This is the second tender the trading firm has floated for cane raw sugar. Last month, it has invited bids for 22,000 tonnes. The cane raw sugar will be imported under the Advanced Licencing Scheme (ALs). Under the scheme, raw sugar is imported at zero d uty and reprocessed it into white (refined) sugar for exports within two years of the license being issued.

MMTC invited the tender on behalf of private companies, who have advanced licence. India's production is estimated to be lower at 18 million tonnes in the 2008-09 season as compared to 26.4 million tonnes in the year-ago period. - PTI
