General IGNOU institutes Raman Chair to promote science education NEW DELHI: In order to promote interdisciplinary research and teaching in basic sciences, the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has instituted Raman Chair. The Chair will coordinate integrated science teaching and multidisciplinary research activities besides developing curricula and syllabi for new courses at all levels — degrees, diploma and certificates, IGNOU Vice-Chancellor, Mr V.N. Rajasekharan Pillai , said. “It will identify bright young talent from all sections of society and regions to participate in the development of science through seminars, with the help of scholars from all over India,” he said. The Raman Chair, headed by P.T. Manoharan — currently Ramanna Fellow, Department of Science and Technology and a Honorary Professor at IIT, Madras, will also work with national policy-making bodies to map out strategies for science promotion at all level s. — PTI
