Govt allows export of 25,000-t of non-basmati rice to SA

NEW DELHI: The government on Friday allowed export of 25,000 tonnes of non-basmati rice to South Africa through public sector trading firm PEC. The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), which issued the notification, said the rice to be exported shall have at least 25 per cent broken grains. The shipments will have to be completed by September.

The government, in April 2008 had imposed ban on export of non-basmati rice to ensure sufficient availability of the grain in the domestic market. But later, it allowed shipment of limited quantity of the grain to some African countries through public se ctor trading firms PEC, MMTC and STC. The shipment to South Africa to be done through PEC, has been added in the notification after cancelling an allotment of 1.17 lakh tonnes to Nigeria, DGFT said.

PEC would procure rice from such rice mills which have surplus rice in their stocks, it said. According to official data, India is estimated to have produced a record 98.89 million tonnes of rice in 2008-09 season against 96.69 million tonne in the prev ious season. – PTI
