Fire dies down in IOC’s four storage tanks

JAIPUR: Two days after a huge fire broke out at the IOC fuel depot near here, the flames died down in four of the 11 storage tanks even as three more bodies were recovered from the site on Saturday, taking the toll to nine.

The unidentified bodies were spotted early today near the site in Sitapura industrial area, 20 kms from here, Jaipur District Collector Mr Kuldeep Ranka said.

Two families of Pratapnagar colony have identified bodies of their relatives Kriparam Meena and Ramniwas Meena, who worked as chargemen with IOC. The fire, which started on Thursday evening, died down in four of the 11 storage tanks in the wee hours but continued to rage in seven tanks which included three each of diesel and petrol, and one of kerosene, Chief Fire Officer Mr Ishwar Lal Jat said.

It will probably take about one more day for the fire to extinguish completely. The intensity of the fire was so high that the temperature shot beyond 52 degree C at a distance of 500 metres where the joint operation team is stationed right now, the chie f fire officer said.

In a joint operation late last night, Army-IOC-Civic administration began digging a five-feet deep trench around the blazing storage tanks which would be filled with water to contain any leakage, he said. - PTI
