Construction work for Chennai metro begins

CHENNAI: The construction work of the Rs 14,600 crore 45 km Chenai Metro Rail project has begun here on Wednesday and the entire project is expected to be completed by 2015, Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister, Mr M K Stalin said.

“The construction work started today and it is expected to be fully completed either by 2014 or 2015,” Mr Stalin said after inaugurating the piling work for the construction of elevated tracks from Koyambedu to Ashok Nagar.

He said Centre had allotted Rs 13 crore for the Metro Rail Project from its share.

“For this scheme, the State government had already allotted Rs 550 crore. More amount would be allotted as per the requirement.''

According to the plans, the phase-1 of the Chennai Metro Rail Project consists of two corridors with a combined length of 45 kms.

Corridor-I with a length of 23.1 kms (14.3 km underground and 8.8 km elevated) would run from Washermanpet to Airport via Anna Salai.

Corridor-II, with length of 22 kms (9.7 kms underground and 12.3 km elevated) would run Chennai Central to St Thomas Mount via Koyambedu.

After its completion, Chennai would have multi-transport systems, including suburban train service, Mass Rapid Transport system, (MRTS) and an integrated city bus transport system. - PTI
