Govt/States Vandiyoor lake to be given facelift MADURAI: The famous Vandiyoor lake in this city is being given a facelift at a cost of Rs 21-crore with an artificial island in the middle and boating facility, officials said on Saturday. The new lake renovation work is being undertaken under the central government's "Lake protection" scheme. A wall would be raised around the lake to prevent the sewage water seeping into the lake. Madakulam, another sprawling lake, would also be renovated. The project proposal had been sent to the government for approval. Vandiyur Lake measuring 683 acres, could store upto 91 million cubic ft. But as it is silted only 71 Mcft of water could be sto red. The lake would be desilted, and the bunds would be widened. A sewage treatment plant also would be built to filter the water from the sewage. The Madakulam lake would be renovated at a cost of Rs.15-crore, they said. - PTI
