SHILLONG: The North Eastern Electric Power Corporation is facing a daily loss of Rs 50 lakh as employees are reluctant to resume work at its Kopili hydroelectric project following a spate of militant attacks.

The Kopili Project has stopped working since February 11. A North Eastern Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO) spokesperson said here that except the Khandong unit (25 MW), work at other units of the 275-MW Kopili hydel project in NC Hills have been susp ended since February 11 following attacks by the **Black Widow'' militants, who first struck on January 14. At least eight employees of the corporation have been killed in separate incidents since January 14, prompting the state government to rush aroun d 300 additional security personnel to the trouble-torn hill district.

The Black Widow rebels also killed four employees of a cement factory at Umrangsuf in the district a few days back. While officials at the NEEPCO headquarters here were tightlipped when asked whether the militant outfit had placed some demands, unconfir med reports said that the rebel group has demanded Rs one crore from the corporation. The matter has been referred to the Centre, the sources said.- PTI
