Govt/States Death toll in TN rains mounts to 86 CHENNAI: The death toll in the heavy rains lashing Tamil Nadu for the past few days has reached 86, rendering thousands homeless and leaving a trail of destruction across the State. Cyclone Nisha, which crossed the coast near Karaikal in the Union Territory of Puducherry yesterday, wreaked havoc in a number of places, including Karaikal, Nagapattinam, Cuddalore and Tiruvarur districts, submerging standing crops in over one lakh acre s. Over 100 fishing boats anchored near the shore in coastal areas were missing, official sources said. As many as 2,426 revenue villages had been fully damaged due to heavy rains, the sources told PTI. Incessant rains for the past few days in Chennai caused extensive damage to roads and resulted in water logging in many areas, prompting the city road and rail transport to curtail services to a number of areas. Several localities in the city like T Na gar, Mambalam and Vadapalani remained under knee deep water for the past few days. The city experienced 24 cm of rain in the 24 hours ending at 0830 hours on Friday. The sources said that a preliminary report of the damage had already been sent to the Centre and that a Central team was likely to visit the State soon to assess the damage. The Chief Minister, Mr M Karunanidhi, who went round the flood-affected areas in the city this morning, expressed hope that the Centre would sanction adequate funds for flood relief works in Tamil Nadu. “We have provided details about the damage caused by the cyclone and heavy rains lashing the state to the Centre,'' he told reporters. - PTI
