I have a multimedia Windows 98 PC with Celeron 266 Mhz, 32 MB RAM and 2.1 GB HDD. Over the last few months, I have installed and un-installed a number of programs. While uninstalling a few of them, the recommended way of uninstalling did not work as one or the other files, typically some install.log or *.isu, was listed as not found. These could also not be uninstalled using ``Add/Remove Programs'' features in the control panel. The folders for these were manually deleted using the Windows explorer. This has possibly left a number of .dll and other files on my hard disk, which are now not needed.
My current problem is that these are occupying space unnecessarily and also slowing down my boot-up time. My current hard boot-up time is 2.40 minutes. What can I do to first cleanse my HDD and retrieve this wasted space? Secondly, how do I boost my boot-up time? Please suggest a solution.

Please do make sure that whenever you delete any folder, you also remove all shared DLLs so that the complete application is removed from your system. Now there are certain third-party utilities such as Norton utilities which are used to remove unnecessary files.
As for boosting boot-up time, it is recommended that you get in touch with your hardware vendor.
