Dear Sir,
The article, ''Passing the buck'' by N. Nagaraj in eWorld dated October 17 was excellent. In this context, I would like to share my views on the salaries and spending by IT professionals.
When millions were living below the poverty line, the IT boom raised the salaries of IT professionals to unimaginable levels.
Against a Rs 10,000-15,000 range, it brought in figures of Rs 40,000 and above. Most IT professionals spent the money lavishly on parties, pubs, pizzas and pool tables and the beginning of consumerism targeted that big disposable income.
Not even two per cent of the pay was diverted for charity or social causes.
Boom time or not, be it in IT or other sectors, well-placed professionals must do more for their fellow human beings. This will help bridge the digital divide and that between the haves and have-nots.
