Try till you succeed

J.N. Iyer, Chennai

I had some problems using Office XP, which have been successfully solved. I am summarising the experience which may help other readers of eWorld.

My system had Celeron 300, Windows 98 (First Edition), Norton 2001 and IE 6, with 128 MB SDRAM and 4 GB HDD. I was using Office 2000 Premium till I installed Office XP Standard and FrontPage XP. With this I faced an error problem -- 0E.0347:00005C54 -- on shutting down. This was occurring for most shutdowns. When I pressed any key to continue, the computer would stall and had to be switched off. The scan disk would appear at restart. After checking the hardware, including the newly-installed SDRAM card, I referred the problem to Microsoft.

Microsoft Telesupport suggested;

1) Reinstalling with Norton 2001 disabled.

2) Installation of all Win 98 and Office XP updates and

3) installation of a patch supplied by them.

These did not help. I found by trials that with Office 2000 and FrontPage XP installed, there was no problem. MS Support then suggested re-installation of Win 98, un-installation and then re-installation of Office XP, with Norton disabled.

With this the problem has disappeared. An ancillary problem of Outlook XP not opening was solved by adding a new profile.

With active help from Microsoft, it took over a month to solve the problems.
