HYDERABAD, Nov. 2

THE Minister of State for Railways, Mr. O. Rajagopal, has inaugurated the multi-modal suburban commuter transport system project at the Necklace Road station here on Thursday.

He said that in view of the pressure on resources, the railway organisation was seeking the cooperation of State Governments in executing projects. The multi-modal transport project, estimated to cost Rs. 69.96 crores, was a joint venture between the Ministry of Railways and the State Government.

The project cost is being shared equally by the Ministry and the State Government. It involves low capital cost and is environment-friendly. It would help integrate the rail and road networks in the suburban sections and serve the needs of people better.

The Chief Minister, Mr. N. Chandrababu Naidu, who was the chief guest said that Rs. 25 crores would be spent on approach roads to the railway stations proposed to be constructed in the first phase of the project which was to be completed in one year. He handed over a cheque for Rs. 7.5 crores to Mr. Rajagopal towards the State Government's share of the project cost.

Mr. K. Vijayarama Rao, Minister for Roads and Buildings, said that under the project the existing railway lines and stations would be modernised and it would give connectivity to new areas. It would also facilitate elevated rail and metro rail transport systems if necessary in future.

Mr. B. Dattatreya, Minister of State for Urban Development, said that if Nampalli and Kacheguda stations were linked by a railway line, it would facilitate the running of a circular train in the twin cities.

Mr. N. Krithivasan, General Manager of South Central Railway, said that under the project multiple electric trains would be introduced. A comprehensive transport plan for connecting new areas and the international airport coming up at Shamshabad was proposed through private participation.
