Aug 1: The Sensex sheds 615.22 points or 3.96 per cent to close below 15,000 .

Aug 6: The BSE Sensex closes down by 235.37 points or 1.55 per cent at 14,903.03.

Aug 8: The open-ended Kotak Gold ETF gets listed on the NSE and opens at the price of Rs 919, which is also day’s high, against its issue price of Rs 892.15. It touches a low of Rs 880 before closing at Rs 892.15.

The rupee opens weaker by 34 paise against the greenback, but regains a bit of lost ground to close at 40.52/53, 12 paise lower from the previous close of 40.41.

Aug. 9: News that the French banking group BNP Paribas has been hit by the US subprime mortgage crisis triggered panic selling in the equity markets on Thursday, wiping out early gains. The Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark index opens strongly with a 234-point gain but falls sharply after European markets open weak with BNP Paribas and a German bank, Commerzbank, seeing a sharp fall in their share prices after BNP’s announcement.

Aug. 16: The benchmark BSE Sensex tanks by 642 points; the rupee loses 60 paise against the US dollar and bond prices retreat by about 45 paise on unconfirmed reports that two other American mortgage lenders have been affected by the sub-prime crisis.

Aug. 20: The BSE-30 Sensex gains 538.57 points intra-day, but settles down considerably lower at 14,427.55, rising 286.03 points or 2.02 per cent in the day

Aug. 22: The BSE Sensex up 259.55 points and closes at 14248.66. The Nifty gains 78.25 points to close at 4153.15.

Aug. 23: Standard Chartered Bank agrees to acquire 49 per cent stake in UTI Securities from the Securities Trading Corporation of India for Rs 147 crore in cash.

Aug. 24: Sensex climbs 260.89 points to close at 14,424.87, up 1.84 per cent, while the broader index S&P CNX Nifty index gains 1.83 per cent at 4,190.15

The country’s forex reserves fall by $2.551 billion to $226.445 billion for the seven days ended August 17, dipping for the second consecutive week.

Aug. 27: The BSE-30 Sensex jumps 417.51 points or 2.89 per cent, to close at 14,842.38 points, while the NSE S&P CNX Nifty gains 112.45 points to end the day at 4,302.60 points.
