Getting to the skin of it

Harsha Subramaniam

VINYL skin hoardings are fast replacing painted hoardings across the country. The design from the ad agency is first scanned and the scanned image goes through a process of colour correction. This is followed by a process of Ripping (Raster Image Processing) where electronic files are converted to printable signals. Then the design is printed on the vinyl according to the required size.

A large-sized vinyl is divided into three or four parts and printed separately. Later, the different parts of the vinyl are seamed together using a radio frequency seamer. Vinyl skin hoarding is costlier because of the imported vinyl and inks used in the process.

However, W.Md.Saqhib of Olive Imaging digital printers, predicts that as prices of vinyl drop, painted hoardings will be completely replaced vinyl skin. But Madison's Balsara points out that painted hoarding will not disappear in the short term. He believes that it will become a small town phenomenon in the future.
