A rousing start

Quiz-master Suresh Kumar in action during the Bangalore finals

DO you know that the `razor and blades' sales model refers to the strategy of selling the master product at a subsidised rate but the accessories at a higher price; that the World Gold Council's headquarters is in Switzerland; or that Saatchi and Saatchi's slogan `Labour isn't working' brought Margaret Thatcher to power in Britain. If yes, then there's good news for you. Big-time business quizzing is back.

The Business Line Quiz 2004, presented by Union Bank of India, kicked off its first leg in Bangalore last week, with over 40 teams participating in the preliminary round. There's much more left in this year's edition of the quiz, though. The Hyderabad leg is slated for April 30 while the one in Chennai (May 7) will be the last of the three city finals. The grand finale, made up of winners and runners-up in each city final, will be held on Chennai on May 7 itself.

The runners-up and the winners

The first leg in Bangalore was a nail-biter, with Cipher, a team represented by Mitesh Agarwal and Ajay Kasargod, beating the i-flex Technologies team of K. Prasanna Kumar and U. Damodharan off the last question. The other finalists were M. S. Ramaiah Institute of Technology, Pidilite, NITIE from Mumbai and Rave publishers.

There were plenty of audience prizes in the form of T-shirts, gift packages, pens, among others, courtesy a host of sponsors, who include Amco Batteries, ITC, Club Mahindra Holidays, Reynolds and Titan. Savera Hotels is the hospitality sponsor while the academic partner is Amity University. Canara Bank, GCC, Prestige, Aashirvaad, Mallya Hospital and Atria Hotel are the regional sponsors.

Those wishing to participate in the next two rounds at Hyderabad and Chennai can contact Mr B. Srinath Iyer, Hyderabad (Phone: 040-23417777/23403902) and Advertising Club Madras, Chennai, (Phone: 28141581, 28142250).
