The Second Bounce of the Ball Ronald Cohen
If you want to build a thriving business you have to see beyond today’s certainties to tomorrow’s uncertainties, advises Ronald Cohen in The Second Bounce of the Ball ( www.land markonthenet.com). For instance, the current ‘bounce’ in the pharma sector, according to Cohen, is happening due to obesity, at which drug companies are directing their research. “But the smart pharmaceutical entrepreneur is already thinking beyond that - to the next bounce of the obesity ball.” For, “the next bounce could be the opportunity on which to build a thriving business.” He cites ‘private equity’ as another example. “The first bounce was private placements of venture capital for start-up investments. The second bounce was the raising of discretionary early-stage, venture capital funds. The next bounce was buy-out funds focused on more mature businesses. Subsequent bounces included the moves towards sector specialisation, regional funds and global funds.” By looking closely at the ball and its trajectory you can reduce the element of uncertainty, assures the author. “What seems to other people to be very uncertain seems to the informed entrepreneur much less uncertain.” A chapter titled ‘Timing is everything,’ observes that it is possible to identify early indicators of the economic trends in each sector. “Is yellow-page advertising holding firm? Are classified job ads buoyant? How buoyant is the newspaper advertising business?” To Cohen, these are three early indicators of the future strength of the consumer economy. “Similarly, construction growth and motor vehicle order books are good indicators of future employment levels.” Prescribed read to add bounce to your biz steps.
