Royal Enfield on Tuesday unveiled ‘Himalayan’, an all-terrain 411 cc motorcycle, as part of its plans to expand its product range in the mid-sized segment. The company’s current models include Bullet, Classic, Thunderbird and Continental GT. It has been working on the Himalayan for five years and tested it across various terrains, Royal Enfield said.

“For Royal Enfield, the Himalayas have always been very important. So, the idea was to build a model which can play a variety of roles, including off-road,” said Siddhartha Lal, MD and CEO. The bike will be launched in the middle of next month, and its price announced then. Himalayan comes with five-speed gearbox, 24.5 BHP engine and has 220mm ground clearance.

“As you can use it for broader purposes, including normal city riding and off-riding, we see it doing well,” Lal said.

The company said Himalayan is the first model to come out of the two-new engine platforms that it is developing and multiple products could be launched on the platforms in future. The products would be in the range of 250 cc and 750 cc, it added.
