Hivelm develops 1,200 KV ultra-high voltage isolator

The city-based power equipment manufacturer Hivelm Industries today despatched a patented 1,200 KV ultra-high voltage isolator to Power Grid Corporation of India.

With this, Power Grid Corporation is taking a giant leap in its quest to set up a 1,200 KV transmission test station at Bina (Madhya Pradesh) through collaborative efforts with 35 leading Indian manufacturers under a public-private partnership model. Flagging off the consignment, S. K. Agrawal, Executive Director (Technology Development) of the Corporation, said if this initiative succeeds, India will be the first country in the world to establish such a high voltage transmission system. Though countries such as the US, Japan, Ukraine, Italy and Russia have made great progress in research and development of a 1200 KV transmission system, only China has recently established a commercial 1100 KV system successfully, he pointed out.

Agrawal said Hivelm is the first Indian company to develop a 1,200 KV isolator. According to Mr Ramana Prasad, Chairman, Hivelm, the company had spent over Rs 4 crore on R&D to develop such a product. It was the first Indian isolator manufacturer to have developed and supplied three different types of 400 KV high voltage isolators as early as in 1976. Isolator is a switch used to completely de-energise an electrical circuit for service or maintenance.

Agrawal further said India’s experience is rich in 11 KV to 420 KV systems but limited in 800 KV AC system. The task of indigenous development of this highest electrical transmission system in the world was spearheaded by Power Grid Corporation. The ultra high voltage transmission system would help in conservation of right of way (as it would replace three 400 KV transmission lines), and “cut down substantially on transmission losses,” he said.
