Taiwan-based AU Optronics Corp (AUO), a leader in optoelectronic (use of light sources in electronic devices) solutions, has held discussions with the Governments of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana to explore the possibilities of establishing their manufacturing products presence.

The $14-billion turnover company’s representatives met the top bureaucracy of Telangana and the IT Minister of AP, Palle Raghunatha Reddy, on Tuesday in Hyderabad, the joint capital of the two states. They also interacted with MIC Electronics, a key technology developer and manufacturer of LED products in the country.

AUO has 45,000 staff spread across its global operations in mainland China, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, US and Europe. It was formed in 2001 with the merger of Acer Display Technology Inc and Unipac Optoelectronics Corporation.

The company is a big player in the TFT-LCD panels (TV, desktop, PC notebooks, monitors) of all sizes and diversified into the green energy industry to provide high efficiency solar solutions. It has among the highest energy conversion efficiency technologies in solar.

AUO representatives evinced interest in LED (light emitting diode) products and solar driven technology applications to meet the demands of the growing Indian market, according to sources.

The Indian market for LED is expected to grow at around 30 per cent CAGR and reach approximately $1,600 million by 2019. At present it is of the order of $300-350 million.

The newly elected BJP Government has also announced plans to give a major push to bridge the huge gap of providing basic lighting to people in the rural hinterland of the country.
