BGR Energy is set to start work on the Rs 1,548-crore contract to supply two 800-MW Steam Turbine Generators for NTPC’s Lara Super Thermal Power Project in Chattisgarh.

The NTPC project is a 4,000 MW project of 5 x 800 MW and the Chennai-based BGR Energy will provide two (2 x 800 MW) steam turbine generators for the project. The company received the Notification of Award on December 13, said B.G. Raghupathy, Chairman & Managing Director, BGR Energy.

Addressing media persons, he said the bid for the project was opened on September 15, 2011, but there had been delay in land acquisition and clearances. Following the approval the two units will be supplied in 44 and 48 months.

He said the company with its capability in engineering-procurement-contracts and balance of plant work for power projects has emerged the lowest bidder in the NTPC’s bulk tender for supply of 11 x 660 MW super critical boilers.

NTPC is its largest customer, accounting for Rs 8,500 crore worth of orders in its total order book of Rs 14,077 crore.

He said work on the company’s joint venture with Hitachi, BGR Turbines Company Pvt Ltd, for production of 660 MW, 800 MW and 1000 MW turbines and generators will start in April 2013.

The Rs 3,000-crore project is to come up to the South of Chennai on the Madurantakam-ECR link road on a 450-acre plot. Land has been acquired, he said. The company has entered into an agreement with the Tamil Nadu Government for the project. BGR holds 74 per cent of the equity and Hitachi 24 per cent.
