The fight between Chettinad group’s former Chairman MAM Ramaswamy and his adopted son, MAMR Muthiah, took an ugly turn on Sunday, with Ramaswamy accusing Muthiah of harassing him and attacking his personal assistants. This was, however, denied by Muthiah’s advocate.

The father and the son have been battling for the control of the group, which has interests in cement and education.

Ramaswamy was ousted from the post of Chairman of the group’s flagship company, Chettinad Cement, at the Annual General Meeting last year.

Shareholders approved an amended resolution that said Ramaswamy will not seek re-appointment; the AGM notice, in contrast, had said that he would.

On Sunday, Ramaswamy told newspersons that Muthiah’s people attacked his personal assistants, and that a couple of them were injured and admitted to the hospital.

“This tamasha has been happening since last afternoon. I don’t know why,” said the 85-year-old Ramaswamy.

Talking to BusinessLine , Muthiah said that his chief security officer had lodged a police complaint this morning that some people had broken into his room.

On hearing of the break-in, he said he rushed back from Singapore last night.

He said that the police visited the palace this morning. The people at the palace are trying to keep me out, he alleged. “Over the last one year, I have been facing such petty problems,” he said.

Ramaswamy said that Muthiah’s grouse was that “I have been spending too much on my personal assistants.

Nearly 100 personal assistants are working with us for nearly 40 years. In this house he does not have any share,” he said.

Talking to reporters, Muthiah’s advocate M Murali denied that the people involved in attack at the palace were sent by his client.

He said that when his client arrived at the Chettinad Palace, he found his room and office locked.

To this, Ramaswamy said, “I did not lock his room, and I don’t have guts to do it,” he said.

“I have lodged three complaints to the police in the past saying that he has been harassing me.

“He does not have any role in this house. He has taken away all the things.

“He wants this house too. Where will I stay then?”
