Coal India Ltd, the Maharatna coal mining CPSU bagged the coveted  'Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puruskar 2015' award in recognition of its contribution towards the field of “encouragement to sports through Corporate Social Responsibility”.

The President, Pranab Mukherjee, gave the award to Sutirtha Bhattacharya, Chairman, CIL who received it on behalf of the company. The award was given on August 29 at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi.

According to the company release, CIL and its subsidiaries are actively associated with promotion and development of sports within and outside the organization. The company promotes rural sports in and around the areas of its operations.

CIL as Principal Partner Sponsor contributed Rs 4 cr towards Hockey Champions Trophy held at Bhubaneshwar between December 6 and 12 last year.

This apart, CIL was also the Title sponsor of the 'National Senior Ranking Badminton Tournament 2015' held at Bangalore from 14 to 18 April.

 

Promoting Sports

The Coal India Sports Promotion Association (CISPA), which looks to promote sports, is also planning to establish a Hockey Excellence Centre' at Vasundhara Area, Sundergarh,  MCL at a project cost of nearly Rs 5 crore, CIL said in a release.

The CISPA is also looking at setting up an Archery Academy at Sonbhadra District, Uttar Pradesh in NCL with a project cost of Rs 30 Lakhs; and an Athletic Academy at Jayant Project, NCL with project cost of around Rs 53 lakh.

This apart, a MoU has been signed between the Jharkhand government and Central Coalfields Limited for establishing Sports Academy and Sports University at Hotwar, Ranchi.  Initial expenditure for innovation and maintenance is pegged at Rs 35 crore.
