German truck and bus maker Daimler has opened its regional centre for commercial vehicles in Chennai.

The centre will oversee sales and service operations of trucks in Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Maldives. The product range covers BharatBenz trucks, FUSO trucks and buses, and Mercedes-Benz trucks, buses, and vans.

Daimler opened its first regional centre for commercial vehicles in Dubai about seven months ago. Now with the Chennai operations, the company has completed the regionalisation of its sales and service organisation for its commercial vehicle business in key regions of growth, according to a statement.

“In Southern Asia, we are now launching the last of a total of six new regional centres. This will also enable us to offer tailored products and services from a single source to our customers in markets such as Sri Lanka, Myanmar or Nepal,” said Wolfgang Bernhard, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG, responsible for Daimler trucks and buses.

“We expect these regional centres across the globe to provide us with substantial further momentum for exports both from Japan and India,” said Marc Llistosella, President and CEO of MFTBC and Head of Daimler Trucks Asia.

Daimler sees favourable demand across its brands and product lines in the region. With its new centre, it aims to capture additional sales.

Daimler factory complex near Chennai currently produces and sells 9 to 49 tonne trucks for the Indian volume market, under the brand BharatBenz buses. It makes Mercedes-Benz premium buses too. The manufacturing operations also serve as an export hub and produce Fuso trucks for South-East Asia, Africa, and Latin America.
