The first-of-its-kind in entry level cars, an urban cross — the Datsun redi-GO — will be launched formally pan-India tomorrow.
The urban cross, a zippy hatchback with the high stance of a cross over, is the third offering under Datsun stable.
A confident Guillaume Sicard, President, Nissan India, said redi-GO is uniquely positioned to add value to the entry level buyer, including the young looking for fun and adventure and the two-wheeler rider with a family looking to upgrade to a four-wheeler.
However, he declined to give details of the pricing which will be announced at the launch tomorrow across several locations, he said.
The Renault-Nissan alliance factory at Oragadam near Chennai has launched its third shift to cater to the production of the redi-GO and is running to near full capacity — “that was not so just six months back," he said.
With the redi-GO, Datsun is entering the largest segment in the entry level — one in four cars sold in India is a small car and is dominated by one manufacturer, he said referring to Maruti Suzuki.
This will bolster Datsun's offerings. The two-year-old brand in India has previously offered the Datsun GO hatchback and the Datsun GO+ family wagon.
Production of the redi-GO is being ramped up and units are reaching the dealers.
The car will be offered in five variants and offers the best-in-class features in terms of fuel consumption, comfort and safety standards. It comes packaged with aggressive warranties. The company has tied up with My TVS to offer service facilities in tier II and III towns, apart from its own facilities. It has over 274 outlets, including 55 Datsun exclusive outlets.
Nissan, which offers the Datsun brand is committed to Tamil Nadu, where it has its 4.80-lakh-a-year production unit in alliance with Renault.
This factory will fully utilise its production capacity in about a year, he said.
